United States Silver Coin Value Calculator

Up until 1964 all silver coins (apart from nickels) circulating in the United States contained 90% silver. As the intrinsic value of the coins exceeded the face value the United States government converted the dime and quarter to so called 'clad' coinage in 1965 which contained no silver. The silver content of half dollars was reduced to 40% from 1965 to 1970 when they too were converted to 'clad' and contained no silver. In World War 2 nickels were produced with 35% silver to preserve the nickel that they usually included for use in armor plating to help the war effort.
